Its always a dangerous path to tread messing with past classics. Many try, most fail. However that has not put off Gerd Janson and his Running Back imprint from attempting the near impossible. The label announced recently that over the coming months it would be dropping a series of releases, titled ‘Super Sound Singles’. The focus, updating “inexpensive” disco and pop hits. With the aim to spurn the worship of rare, expensive records.

The second in the series is a revision of the 1984 hit “Get Closer” by Valerie Dore. A slow, romantic slice of italo disco. The Italian queen of “romantic dance” made her second single “Get Closer” a clairvoyant poem about life and love. Label boss Gerd Janson thankfully retains much of that quality in the edit, extending its length and making some subtle changes to the track’s arrangement. Thankfully Gerd Janson made the sensible decision to avoid over complicating his edit. A decision that has paid off. A compelling edit made good by his less is more approach.

A nice touch was the decision to invite Italian compatriots and modern day mix masters, Tiger&Woods. The Italian duo stick close to the original but with their own style. Much of the track loops parts of the verse, burning away until the climax five minutes in.This extra long version keeps the beauty of the original but adds a modern twist to the production.

Finally DJ Oyster offers his take. Ultimately a track only for DJ use.  “Tool” filters and echoes the vocals as though you’re hearing the lyrics in the back of your mind. Ultimately the 3 track EP is an impressive selection of remixes that add their own twist to this club classic, with out down playing the original beauty of the track.
