Girl Scout Boy Scout is a monthly two-part feature exploring the newest selectors making movements in the world of Underground music.

Last week we focused on 5 women making movements. This week we turn to the boys. 2 Norwegian’s make our list as well as one of Block 9’s biggest contributors. To finish this months list we introduce two stripped back selectors who are carving their own niches in very different ways.

Prins Thomas

Prins Thomas is an artists that has had an infatuation with music since day dot. Originally his focus was break dancing, with DJing only an extension of this pursuit. He began mixing hip hop, electro and the likes of Arthur Baker and Shep Pettibone. Before taking up the bass and as he puts it, “playing in more bands than Norway has trees.”

The Norwegian, is responsible for a swag of the eclectic ‘space-disco’ sounds emanating from his homeland. Having always been a passionate record collector, he also runs a number of labels including Feedelity, Full Pupp and Internasjonal. Prins Thomas future is bright with his ability to play the full spectrum between futuristic disco and heavier industrial sounds. A true crate digger and a serious selector.

Miller – Real Gang

Hailing from the heart land of Englands Industrial North. Miller is best known for being one of the founders of Real Gang. A party found on the forgotten Ibiza spirit. Miller and the rest of the gang have created something quite special on the White Isle. A collective based around friendship and everything that entails. Their parties at Underground Ibiza this year have reengaged the true hedonistic, care free attitude on which Ibiza was founded. As a result of this attitude, Real Gang have made a statement. It isn’t too late to stop the VIP culture, social media frenzy and paper chasing plague that many think grips the island. True Ibiza will not die, as long as it has a Real Gang effortlessly and unselfishly fighting its corner.

This summer although a huge milestone is not the start of Millers success. The young producer has been busy grafting away for years. His tour schedule grows month on month thanks to his stripped back sound. Bookings across Europe’s biggest venues including Fabric London, Brett Amsterdam and DC10. Plus a string of releases on Slapfunk Records, In Haus Wax and his own Real Gang Records have garnered a loyal fan base.

Having experimented with records from a really young age, Miller’s sheer passion for his work is evident when he plays. The future is bright for the young producer. His own determination combined with the energy, originality and purity of Real Gang means the sky is the limit for this true underground artist.

Lindstrom

Lindstom aka Hans-Peter is another Norwegian based artist flying the flag for the growing underground scene. Never having listened to dance music growing up, he was instead raised on country and western music. Only listening to dance music for the first time when studying how to make it. The polar opposite to your stereotypical DJ, Hans-Peter only goes clubbing when performing under his Lindstrom monica. Instead preferring quiet nights alone in the studio.

Lindstrom used to play the piano in a gospel choir and the Hammond organ in a Deep Purple tribute band in his early twenties. Around 99′ he got fed up with music, sold his instruments, and moved from Stavanger to study literature at the University of Oslo. As retirement often proves unbearable to music lovers, he soon found himself busking the main street of Oslo with his guitar. One thing led to the other: he bought a sampler, borrowed a few 12″s to study the structure of dance music, and had a go at it.

Lindstrom has now built a reputation as one of Norways greatest musical exports. One article is quoted as claiming that “Hans-Peter Lindstrom is closing in on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as being Norway’s poster boy of choice.” This is thanks to his highly acclaimed EPs and remixes for names like Franz Ferdinand and LCD Soundsystem and The Juan Maclean.

Sweely

Sweely is a 23 year old French-American from Nice. The new generation of artist, that effortlessly navigate between house, minimal and electro. His futuristic, groove-laden productions and explosive live sets have earned him a residency at the infamous Concrete in Paris. A club notorious around the world for championing the most exciting and forward thinking underground artists.

A DJ and producer Sweely defines himself as a skate nerd whose heart beats on the street. Influenced by a broad range of musical styles including Grunge, Rap, Hip hop, Jazz and Electro. Sweely has always been interested in exploring a variety of musical instruments. Percussion is a firm favourite, with guitars and keyboards featuring heavily in his live sets. He can be found dancing behind his TR-8 and MPC, crafting rolling and captivating music. However his biggest joy and his acoustic instrument of choice is his trusted didgeridoo. Something that has featured in his releases on Lobster Thermin and its sister label Distant Hawaii.

Having already achieved a lot in his short career. A growing number of fans across the globe and the backing of Concrete mean the young Frenchman is far from finished. A diamond in the rough that will be swaying hips and raising hands for years to come.

Gideön

Gideön is a man that is dedicated to music. A self confessed vinyl archivist, based in London. Gideön has been playing Northern Soul, House, Disco, Vintage Gospel and Rare Groove for the last 24 years. His first decks came aged fourteen. Ever since he has been on a mission collecting black music vinyl from the US, Jamaica and the UK. As well as his expensive vinyl habit, Gideön is the musical curator behind some of the worlds biggest events.

He is the founder of an off-location party catering for Berlin’s musically discerning gay Underground. Held in off the grid dis-used buildings away from the regular club map. One of his most impressive feats is his hybrid music & art installations. Currently part of the Block9 portfolio at Glastonbury Festival. These include The NYC Downlow, The London Underground, Genosys and Maceo’s. As well as co-designing and producing these venues, he curates their musical programmes. On top of all this he has a weekly radio show on London’s Soho Radio. Welcoming the likes of Midland, Prosumer, Bicep, Seth Troxler and Mr G.

Dance music clearly runs through Gideöns blood. As cliché as it sounds he is a a true champion of proper partying. He believes in the underground. Freedom away from the flash of a camera and ring of a cash register. Although a seasoned veteran of the game. Gideön and his vibrant, genre spanning sets are a thing of magic. Something we implore you to witness and can guarantee will open your eyes.
